<hi style=afpcap>The C-82 was produced by Fairchild to meet an Army requirement issued in 1941 for a specialised cargo aircraft. At the time it was the company's largest project, and was designed to enable large items of cargo to be loaded with ease through rear clam shell doors. The Army ordered more than 200 C-82s , with a further contract for 792 additional Packets being cancelled after VJ Day. The type was operated primarily by Tactical Air Command with others flown by the Military Air Transport Service, before being withdrawn from service during the mid '50s when it had been replaced by the Fairchild C-119.. </hi>
